Horror month continues at from the sticks to the bricks and back again with a visit to K.A. (Katherine Alice) Applegate, an American author of young adult and children’s fiction. Applegate is best known for her children’s fantasy and science fiction writing particularly the series Animorphs, Remnants and Everworld.
Born: October 9, 1956, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Spouse: Michael Grant, young adult author and co-author on some of Applegate’s projects.
Children: Jake and Julia
Genres: Children’s fantasy, science fiction and adventure.
Awards: SCBWI 2008 Golden Kite Award for Best Fiction for Home of the Brave; 2013 Newbery Medal for The One and Only Ivan.
Since receiving the Newberry Medal, Applegate has published the novel Crenshaw which was released in September 2015. Crenshaw deals with the very difficult issues of childhood poverty and homelessness.
In conjunction with her book release Applegate is running a promotional contest at independent bookstores in the US participating in the Nationwide Crenshaw Food Drive. Patrons are asked to donate non-perishable food and other items at the participating locations which are partnering with local food banks to help families in need. Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group is donating $100 to No Kid Hungry for every bookstore that registers for the Crenshaw Food Drive. The winning bookstore will receive a personal visit from Applegate. Applegate and Macmillan are encouraging everyone to contribute by donating to local food banks or to No Kid Hungry and participating in the #CrenshawFoodDrive social media campaign.
