Writer’s Quote Wednesday – Thomm Quackenbush

New Year’s Eve and January bring with them the age-old dilemma of whether to make resolutions or not. Most years I opt out. I fall into the camp of why torture ourselves – resolutions are self-defeating behavior.

We set these lofty goals, usually without breaking them down into manageable parts, and make no contingency plan for getting off track. So when we do get off track, we derail and then beat ourselves up for the rest of the year promising ourselves next year will be different. The following New Year’s Eve arrives in all its glory and we repeat the cycle. Quackenbush’s quote speaks to the existence of this inane cycle. So for 2016, I resolve to make no resolutions.

Don’t get me wrong, I will have goals throughout the course of the year. And, I will write them down and break them into smaller manageable parts. I will also use my editorial calendar for my blog as it helps me keep focused and on track. The thing is that I do not feel compelled to make any big announcements on my blog or in person as to what the big picture goals are during the month of January. I will instead use that time to plot out my editorial calendar and action steps for other goals to be worked on during the first quarter of the year. And the key for me is looking at my editorial calendar and action plan on a consistent and regular basis throughout the year. By doing a weekly or monthly review, I become aware when I have gotten off course and that knowledge in itself helps bring me back on course quicker even if that means changing the calendar or plan.
