Monday Motivations – Mister Rogers

This week’s Monday motivation is in response to the terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday night.  Fred Rogers quoting his mother’s advice to always look for the helpers comes to mind.

It is easy to become enveloped by the tragedy and only see darkness.  Mister Rogers encourages us in the face of catastrophe and tragedy to look beyond the pain and sorrow.  We must open our eyes to the goodness that surrounds even the tragic events in the form of the helpers.  Helpers can come in the form of a first responder helping an injured person to safety or in the form of random strangers opening up their hearts to help others.  The helpers provide hope in the most tragic of circumstances.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.

– Fred Rogers

I am reminded of the countless acts of kindness that followed the 9/11 attacks, the Sandy Hook school shooting, the Boston Marathon bombing and natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Sandy.  Thousands upon thousands of people responded worldwide with not just shock and fear but also with sympathy and kindness.

This week, Mister Rogers’ quote motivates me to not just look for the hope, the helpers but to also be that hope.  We cannot all fly to Paris and help there but we can all perform one random act of kindness this week in memory of the lives lost in Paris.  Random acts of kindness do not need to cost money – just the currency of your time and kindness.

Will you join me this week in honoring Paris with an act of kindness?  If you do please tell me about it in the comments.

I will leave you with this video of a random act of kindness on the streets of Paris; a man playing John Lennon’s Imagine on a piano outside Bataclan concert hall in Paris on the Saturday after the terrorist attacks.
